Anime Fandom Research and Participation

Okay, so I haven't updated this website in a year, and the Anime and Transnationalism book doesn't seem to be getting off the ground due to competing committments that the other writers have. I'm putting that project on indefinite hiatus. However, I am still waiting to hear from a publisher on whether or not my dissertation will be published as a book.

Also, I have been in a tenure-track position at Gainesville State College since August, and I am quite glad to be there. And yes, I will update my online c/v to reflect this and other developments in my career. Eventually.

Before I ring in 2009, I just wanted to say that I received my Ph.D. on December 19th, and I am currently turning my dissertation into a book manuscript. I am also issuing a call to the other contributors to the Anime and Transnationalism book to submit their manuscripts by August 1, 2009. May this year beat the low expectations of the pundits.

I've added a new blog to the website. Expect posts that are largely related to my research, with a few reviews of anime and some personal musings thrown in.

The links page to the right has been updated to reflect more contributors who have been added to the Anime and Transnationalism project. March 24 I head to Manhattan to present at the American Educational Research Association, though this time not on anime or anime fandom. However, at least one scholar, Michele Knobel will be presenting a paper on AMVs entitled "Remixing Media: What Fans’ Anime Music Videos Have to Teach Us About New Literacies". It is always heartening to find that studies in anime are making inroads into my discipline.

My conference experience at Ubiquitous Media: Asian Transformations went so well that I will be editing a volume along with other graduate students and recent Ph.D.s on anime and transnational reception! I am very excited about this opportunity to help all of us showcase the "next generation" of anime and manga-related scholarship. Initial drafts will be due on July 1, 2008, so stay tuned for further developments.

My talk at Chibipa: Reincarnation went very well. I invited Jason Bailey, the con chair to consider an idea to hold an "Otaku Seminar" wherein anime and manga scholars would read through texts I assign in advance on the convention website. Each scholar would submit a question for the seminar to consider at the convention, and we would try to answer, or at least address them. It would be a step beyond the "How to Conduct Anime and Manga-Related Research" panel that I have done at anime conventions for a number of years now. We will see if my call bears any fruit. I also invite other anime and manga convention chairs to consider allowing a similar activity at their conventions. I would more than likely be happy to help put it together.

As far as website updates go, I have updated my "Links" section to the right to include more names of scholars I have worked with (or will be soon), the "Academic and Anime Conventions" section to add more conventions I have been involved with, and my curriculum/vitae to add more conference presentations.

On a side note, considering my current dissertation progress, I will be set to receive my Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in May (or August) 2008. Knocks on wood towards this end would be appreciated.

July 8, 2007

I will be at the Obiquitous Media: Asian Transformations conference at Tokyo University, as well as in the Tokyo area from July 12-19. The paper I am presenting is titled, "Race and Nationalism: Permeance in U.S. Media and the Japanese Animation Fandom Response".

I have also updated my list of essays to reflect two dissertation chapters and the paper I am presenting at Tokyo University.
